C. Custer, Bell Tower Foundation support casino vote

To the editor,

I told the Iowa Gaming Commission in 2013 that it was not easy being Green (Greene) as we had been a “drive-through”, not a “drive-in” for tourists, new residents, new businesses nor industries.  A casino would provide enjoyment for gaming, cultural entertainment, new employment opportunities, potential new residents and draw tourists to see other attractions in the county.

I now have the opportunity to say how much easier it is today to be Greene!  Casino funds helped the Bell Tower Community Foundation achieve our goal of adding enough bells to complete a 47-bell carillon in the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower. The funds helped provide the momentum for other donors to step up to the challenge.  Today, the tower offers bell concerts throughout the day and during the summer live mid-day concerts by Mahanay Maestros, talented musicians from the Greene County area. And this year, the tower was named the state’s outstanding tourist attraction, with attendance topping our goal of 6,000 visitors.

We need to continue to make it easier to be Greene.  Vote YES, November 2.
